Parts used medicinally

Anti-inflammatory and antiseptic especially for upper respiratory tract; used externally for skin ailments, analgesic; spring tonic.

Medical Uses

Bark and the leaves are mildly diuretic, expectorant and stimulant.

Inner bark is harvested from side branches & dried for later use such sa boiled down to syrup for coughs.

Leaf buds used as a salve for colds, coughs and irritated nostrils.

Spring through to fall.

Factors involved

Susceptible to drought, may be prone to phenological effects of climate change, budding too early etc.; these factors are balanced by Aspen's ability to re-sprout from its root system after fire cycle, high genetic diversity and wide range, far-ranging seed dispersal.
